AI and the Future of Design Education

As part of the College of Architecture and Planning's annual retreat, faculty, staff, and researchers gathered for a series of conversations exploring the opportunities, challenges, and future directions shaping the college's teaching, research, and creative work. Among them was a panel discussion on the future implications of artificial intelligence for design education and research. Organized in partnership with Dean Arnab Chakraborty, the panel was moderated by Guang Tian and featured Manish Parashar, Penny Atkinsand Callie Reed.

The conversation examined how AI is reshaping higher education and professional practice, with discussion focused on implications for teaching and learning, new possibilities for research and interdisciplinary collaboration, and the resources available to support engagement across the university. Panelists discussed the rapidly evolving AI landscape and its growing presence across text, images, maps, data, code, and design applications. While AI may create new possibilities for exploration, iteration, and productivity, participants also discussed its limitations, uncertainties, and potential impacts on learning and professional practice, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong disciplinary foundations, critical thinking skills, and professional judgment as new technologies continue to emerge.
 
Participants also explored what responsible engagement with AI might look like in practice, including questions of privacy, bias, transparency, accountability, academic integrity, and the broader social impacts of AI. Throughout the discussion, panelists highlighted the importance of AI fluency and the need for diverse disciplinary perspectives in shaping how these technologies are developed and used.
 
The discussion also provided an overview of the university's evolving AI ecosystem and broader Pro-Human AI Initiative, which seeks to advance research, education, innovation, workforce development, and public impact while ensuring AI serves people and society. Panelists highlighted emerging research infrastructure, including Redtail, Utah's new AI Factory supercomputer, along with resources that support teaching, research, and community engagement across the university. Examples included the Martha Bradley Evans Center for Teaching Excellence, the One-U Responsible AI Initiative, research funding opportunities, and the growing ecosystem of AI programs available through the Office of Artificial Intelligence. These resources were discussed in the context of helping faculty, staff, researchers, and students navigate the opportunities, challenges, and questions associated with a rapidly evolving technology.
 
Audience members contributed thoughtful questions about learning, research, workforce preparedness, and the future of design disciplines. Their engagement expanded the conversation beyond technical capabilities to broader questions about values, responsibility, and the role of higher education in shaping the future of AI.
 
Reflecting on the discussion, Dean Arnab Chakraborty noted:
"It was exciting to convene this college-wide conversation on AI and design education. The discussion highlighted strong interest in understanding the opportunities AI tools may create, particularly in preparing students with new design-related skills. At the same time, audience members, including several with expertise in AI research, raised important questions about AI's potential impact on student learning, academic values, and the future of design education. These are questions we will continue to explore in the months ahead as we consider where designers and design disciplines can provide leadership in shaping the future of AI."
The discussion reinforced that AI's impact on design education remains an open and evolving question. While new tools continue to emerge, the human qualities that underpin design, including creativity, critical inquiry, ethical reasoning, collaboration, and an understanding of community needs, remain central. Conversations like these help ensure that the future of AI is shaped not only by technological advances, but also by the values, expertise, and perspectives of the communities it will affect.
