Get Started with ChatGPT Edu

ChatGPT at The U

Accessing ChatGPT Edu

    • Within 24 hours, you will receive an invitation email from OpenAI. 
    • Please check your spam/junk folder if you don’t see it. 
  • Click log in and select “University of Utah ChatGPT Edu”  
  • Log in using University of Utah SSO:  
    • Enter your uNID and password  
    • Complete Duo two-factor authentication  
  • After successful authentication, you will be redirected back to ChatGPT and can begin using the service  

 

Important Note: 

  • Confirm you’re signed into ChatGPT Edu: 

Once logged in, look at the bottom left corner of the ChatGPT Edu interface. You should see “University of Utah ChatGPT Edu” listed under your profile, which confirms you are using the university-managed environment. 

Running into credit limits?
 
The Office of Software Licensing has made available additional ChatGPT EDU credit packs for purchase (details below).  Here is the rate card, if helpful, to calculate and plan usage.
 
  2. Log in with your uNID
  3. Scroll down to the red button and click  "See the full list of products"
  4. Scroll down and select an option for 10,000 or 20,000 credits
  5. Click the red button titled "Add to Cart"
  6. Complete the steps to checkout

 

Downloading and Logging in to the Codex App with University SSO

1. Download the Codex App

  1. Visit the Codex app download page: Codex App Download Page
  2. Download the version for your operating system:
    • Windows
    • macOS 
  3. Run the installer and complete the installation.

2. Launch the App

  1. Open the Codex application after installation.
  2. On the sign-in screen, select Sign in with ChatGPT.

3. Sign In Using University SSO

  1. Enter your uNID@umail.utah.edu university email address.
  2. If your account is configured for Single Sign-On (SSO), you will be redirected to your university's authentication page.
  3. Sign in using your university credentials and complete any required multi-factor authentication (MFA) steps.
  4. After successful authentication, you will be returned to the Codex app and signed in automatically.

Reminder:  

ChatGPT EDU and Codex is approved for use with public data, as defined by Rule 4-004C.

 

Guidelines

  • For all university-related tasks, use your ChatGPT Edu instance rather than a personal ChatGPT account. This ensures you have access to the university’s higher data privacy standards and academic-focused optimizations—helping you get the most out of ChatGPT while keeping your work secure and aligned with university guidelines.
  • ChatGPT Edu can be used for any work that doesn’t contain sensitive or restricted data, as defined by university rules. Hospital and clinic personnel don’t yet have permission to use the tool—access for these environments is being evaluated separately to meet health-care data protection requirements.
  • Review university AI guidelines and policies for more information on how to use AI responsibly and effectively.
