Prompt Engineering

How to Talk to AI

The quality of what AI gives you depends a lot on how you ask. Learning to write effective prompts is a skill worth building. Here is a simple formula and some examples to get you started.

 The Prompt Formula

Role/Context +

Task/Action  +

Constraints  +

Outcome/Focus

Here is what that looks like in practice:

(As an expert in nutrition) + (explain the benefits of a plant-based diet) + (in simple terms, under 100 words) + (focusing on long-term health impacts)

 Pro Tip: Meta-Prompting

You can ask AI to critique its own response, suggest improvements, or explain its reasoning. For example, try: "What are the weaknesses in the answer you just gave me?"  This kind of back-and-forth often leads to much better results.

Try These Prompts

Concept Exploration

When you need to understand a tricky topic

"Can you explain this concept in different contexts (e.g., academic, practical, or real-world applications)?"

Argument Improvement

When you are working on an essay or paper

"What parts of my argument could be improved, and how can I strengthen them for clarity and depth?"

Study Guide Creation

When you are preparing for an exam

"Create a study guide for [topic] that includes key concepts, definitions, and 5 practice questions with answers."

Research Overview

When you are starting a research project

"Provide a brief overview of [topic], including the main theories, key researchers, and current debates in the field."

5 Tips for Better Prompts

Be Clear and Specific

The more specific your prompt, the more useful the response. Instead of 'tell me about history,' try 'explain the causes of the French Revolution in 3 paragraphs.'

Break It Down

For complex tasks, ask one thing at a time. You will get better results from a series of focused prompts than from one long, complicated request.

Give Context

Tell the AI what you are working on, what class it is for, or what level of detail you need. Context helps AI give you more relevant answers.

Ask for Alternatives

If the first response is not quite right, ask for a different angle or approach. You can say 'try again with a different perspective' or 'give me three options.'

Iterate and Refine

Great prompts often take a few tries. Treat it like a conversation. Refine your question based on what AI gives you, and you will get closer to what you need.
