AI at the U: February 11 Forum Recap
The Office of Artificial Intelligence hosted its AI at the U Forum on February 11, bringing together faculty, staff, researchers, and students to explore the latest developments in AI tools, education, policy, and research across campus.
The forum highlighted a range of upcoming AI‑focused events and communities, including the AI Community of Practice, AI Office Hours, AI Tinker Lab, and special interest groups. These gatherings continue to support campuswide learning, collaboration, and responsible AI exploration.
Attendees also heard “AI in Action” stories demonstrating how teams across the University are applying AI to improve outcomes—from mathematics instruction and academic advising to groundbreaking neuro‑robotics research that restores movement and sensation.
The community was invited to share additional projects and success stories to help build a collective picture of AI innovation happening across campus.
ChatGPT Edu: Training & Feature UpdatesThe university continues expanding support for ChatGPT Edu, offering multiple training opportunities such as ChatGPT Edu 101 & 102, weekly getting started sessions, and the AI Tinker Lab. These activities help faculty, staff, and students build confidence in using the platform for teaching, research, and administrative workflows.
The forum also reviewed key benefits of ChatGPT Edu, including secure access within a university‑managed environment, advanced models, and a broad suite of tools such as deep research, image generation, web search, and canvas. Usage patterns will guide long‑term planning to ensure sustainability while retaining as many capabilities as possible.
Policy & Responsible UseA reminder was shared about responsible use of all AI tools at the University:
- Do not use sensitive or restricted data, including student records or PHI
- Review university data policies and AI guidance
- Reach out through Office Hours or the AI Support Form for case‑specific help
Updates from education partners showcased major progress across the University’s AI learning initiatives. Highlights included the Eccles School of Business’s four‑part roadmap for building AI‑fluent education, the forthcoming Business AI Minor (launching Fall 2026), and professional education programs focused on practical AI skills for working professionals.
Research Computing & Data Infrastructure ExpansionA major portion of the forum focused on significant growth in Research Computing & Data (RCD) infrastructure. Enhancements include new regulated and protected environments for sensitive data, substantial expansions in GPU capacity, and progress on the U’s joint investment with the State of Utah and HPE to deploy a large‑scale, state‑of‑the‑art compute resource for AI and advanced research. These developments are part of a broader strategy to build a coordinated, statewide ecosystem of research computing and data services that supports discovery, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
ClosingThe forum highlighted the university’s rapidly expanding AI ecosystem—spanning infrastructure, instruction, policy, research, and community engagement. All are encouraged to stay connected through ongoing events, training sessions, and regular AI communications.
